MODIFICATIONS, CONVERSIONS, HISTORY
I bought the car almost a year ago from a guy who did it up about ten years or so ago. It was pretty rough but had a fair bit done to it. It came with koni adjustable shocks and sports springs, stag front struts and brakes, 15" minilites, bosch fuel pump, balanced engine with tr5 cam, re-trimed interior, mk2 trailing arms AND the all important datsun rear axle conversion. Since having it i have had the metering unit & injectors reco'd (it leaked more fuel than it used), changed back to manual steering, fitted superpro polyurethane bushes all round and swapped the faulty A type overdrive 'box for a J type one.
Future plans include lowering and stiffening the suspension including re-cambering the rear end, stiff sway bars, etc, before doing anything to the engine. An lsd would also be high on the wish list. As for the body work, there is a bit of rust and a fair few little dints to take care of but ill worry about perfection when i have my own place to work on it.

This week I picked up some new ball joints for the front end. They were quite pricey but the old ones were within an inch of their life. I cant believe anyone could let such a critical thing get so bad! I was told i needed a press to get the old ones out so i was very happy that my bench vice, some big sockets and a really long pipe did the trick, (see photo). Just remember if you do yours, give the arm end arouund the ball joint insert a good belting with a hammer to shock loose any corrosion holding it together.
Seeing the ball joints took less time than expected i had time to do a heap of other jobs on the car. I adjusted the tappets and checked the compression and found one cylender a bit low, it runs alright though so ill worry about that later. The next thing was to replace the leaking seals between the distributor and the metering unit, which was a bit scary 'cause I hate fiddleing with anything in that area in case it just wont start again. It gets better each time though. I shortened and tidied a lot of wires in the engine bay, most of which were for the electronic ignition that the old owner installed, some were almost a metre long! While doing this i found that the vacuum advance was not working. I bit the bullet and took out the elecronic ignition optic disc thing and put in the distributer off my old mk2, which must have been renewed at some stage. It turned out that the electronic ignition part was easy to use anyway, much easier than adjusting points! I advanced up the timing a bit too and the engine now pulls much more strongly, especially off idle, which i always had problems with but it still needs doing propperly as i just had a guess.
Im getting closer each time to tackling the rust in the sills, which i hate because after owning a fiat, an alfa, another 2500 and a ford escort, I am sick of cutting out rust!
