MODIFICATIONS, CONVERSIONS, HISTORY
Brought as my first road car and it's a real beaut!
Has the sprint alloys with new 175 tyres to get it rolling.
Immaculate in and out, with only a few patches on the underside of the sill!
Modifications :
- Polyurethane subframe mounts
- 12v Lucas Sports Ignition coil
- Sprint alloy wheels
- Goodridge Brake hoses
- Electric aerial
- New wheel bearings all way round
- JVC CD player & speakers
- Seat belts inc. lap all round
- Chrome left and right mirrors'
- Champion Double-Copper plugs
- Hi-Po HT leads
- Mountney Steering wheel
After debating about modifying it I've decided to get a Sprint to play with - whilst the 1850 will remain stock, as I think it deserves to.
Possibly one of only ~50 1850HL autos or so left in the United Kingdom.
Starred, albeit briefly, in a documentary called "Poisoned", in a recreation of the assassintion of Georgi Markov in 1978. The car was one of two in the street, filmed in Bristol. I ended up on the cutting room floor, but the car didn't!
Men and Motors did a short, ~2 minute feature on the car whilst it was on display at the Retro Cars Show 2005, on the Retro Rides stand. They seemed impressed with it, even recommending it over a Sprint...can't say how accurate that observation might have been though :D ...also seen in Practical Performance Car magazine & Retro Cars Magazine.
Recently completed a 550 mile 12 hour hike round Wales and various other places. Lots of appreciative looks and heads sticking out the windows on the motorways :D
In my opinion, the 1850 makes an excellent mile eater - I got out of mine after doing 7 hours straight - felt like I'd been in a sofa - lovely and comfortable. However, I was deaf - remember to look into preventing that buffeting somehow! Also returned 30-40mpg!
***Update***
Now I'm at uni, doing Automotive Engineering (Coventry), XYJ has been tucked up in a nice warm garage with a dehumidifier, after being dragged back into daily service and 4000 miles (without a single hitch and some 150 mile round trips).
See the bottom of the page for a soundclip :D
Also :
I'd like to thank my Dad, for advice, support and much more from the start! Couldn't keep it on the road without you!
Many thanks to Sheridan for his technical help and lending of his brilliant garage!
Special thanks to Dave, for spotting the obvious flaw with the dizzy rebuild, after the electronic ignition fiasco.
Greetings to all from the TDC for their patience with a persistent non-member :)
XYJ has now been sold and is called 'Gabriel', with my '1500' replacing her. She will be sorely missed but keeping her was not an option - but it was a pleasure to own her. Onwards and upwards!
