The first time I saw a TR6 was at the age of 11 in Cheyenne Wyoming. I knew I wanted one as soon as I saw it. It was odd for a kid that had grown up on a ranch to lust after sports cars but I did. While kids that I grew up with were perfecting their horseriding skills, I was building models of sports cars and trying to drive anything I could on wheels. I used to steer my dad’s truck while he stood in the back and threw hay off to cattle. I had to stand on the seat to see over the steering wheel while a sandbag held the throttle pedal at the perfect walking speed. A feat that was not at all difficult for a Ford F-250 Ranger. This was soon followed by driving tractors and other ranch & farm equipment, motorcycles, ATV’s and go karts.

My first sports car, at 17, was a Datsun 240Z. Unfortunately the amount of rust eating away at that car made the relationship a short lived one. When I was 19 I was able to purchase this TR6. The original owner was an instructor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. I bought the car from the second owner in Windsor Colorado. His plans were to restore the car but he didn’t have the time. While it was in his care, it did have a flirtation with fame. It was used as a stage prop in the Windsor High School production of Grease. It was chosen since it was the only car they could find that would fit through the doors and was a convertable. So it is quite plausible to say that this car is a star of the stage.

I slowly rebuilt every component of the car, all while driving and enjoying it. In January of 2001 while driving this car, I was car number 8 in a 40 car pile up. The next nine months saw a frantic strip down, repair and repaint of the car. At the same time, I built a performance version of the engine (details below).

Non Standard Paint Colour
Performance Engine
9.0:1 Compression
Triple 1.75″ ZS Carbs
Ram Air intake w/remote air filter
Goodparts GP-3 Camshaft
Roller Rockers
Tubular pushrods
Ported and polished cylinder head
Adjustable timing gear
Gear reduction starter
Stainless Tubular Extractor
Stainless Twin Sports exhaust system
Re-cored (4 row) radiator w/ 2800CFM electric fan
Pertronix Ignitor
Semi-comp springs (lowered 1.5 inches)
KYB shocks, front and rear
7/8″ front sway bar
Poly-Urethane bushings
Boxed differential mounts
Cosmetic Roll-Bar
Cockpit wind deflector

The cold air box (Goodpart’s Ram Air) has velocity stacks built into the box and has a remote air filter located in front of the radiator. I have also installed an ARE (Alexander Racing Enterprises) heat shield and a RATCO throttle cable conversion. I painted the carbs black as an aesthetic choice after seeing black carburetors on a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 FHC. I feel that the choice looks good with the black valve cover, aluminum intake, black carburetors and then aluminum air box. It certainly draws attention whenever I open the bonnet in public settings like car shows and cruise ins.

I experimented with a plexiglas wind blocker and rather like it in use. It creates a more pleasant cockpit while driving by reducing the wind buffeting. It is a rather simple arrangment and very easy to install and remove.
