Hi and a happy new year to all.
I have a tr7 with 5speed and was wondering whether to use the 5 speed behind the rover v8 or should I use another type of box? Also are there any or many probs with the conversion from 2 litre to 3.5 litre.thanks,Frank

welcome frank, unfortunately I can’t be of much help with your question, but is sounds interesting. Did the original factory tr7v8 use the standard 5sp gearbox ?

    Hi Stu,
Thats what I would like to know too.I dont have any manuals or info on the TR8 so dont know what box they use.I scored a set of extractors for rover/tr7 the other day.looked at TR7 and looked at a rover V8 I had and thought, why not?Thats as far as I’ve got so far. Thanks for the reply, cheers,Frank

    Hi Stu,
My understanding is they used standard 5 speed box with V8 bellhousing and a shortened tail shaft and a lower diff ratio ie. 3.08 compared to 4.1
log on to Rimmers Site in Uk , they sell complete V8 conversion kits and I am sure they quote the specs. in there somewhere.
If you guys want to see how not to treat a TR 7 log on to cmitas.com go to club video’s 2004 Domain Hillclimb and wait till about half way through ( 5’20" )
Hopfully it will be rebirthed as a TR 7 V8

As Avcool says The TR 8 did use the same 5 sp LT77 gearbox as the 4cyl TR7 and he is also right about the bell housing etc. but if you are in Australia there are local suppliers here in OZ that can supply eg. Triumph Rover Spares over in Adelaide will have the bits for the conversion at a cost that might seem pricey but compared to buying O/S but with the exchange rate as it is since the arse fell outta the A$, it will probably be cheaper in the long run.
The LT77 gearbox is really only just up to the job of transferring the extra torque of the standard 3.5 Rover V8 so you might be better off with a Toyota 5 sp and a bellhousing to suit from Dellow up in Sydney.
Here is a link to a forum that specialises in TR7s and 8s http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/ the crew there are very knowledgeable and helpful.
